Woke up around 5:45, got some coffee, and my roomate Mark and I went for a run along Alisal road. As the old guy with the stick promised we saw a wild turkey. Sizable. Enough for 8-10 people with some fixins and a nice black bean turkey chili. Easy run. 54 minutes. Maybe just short of 7 miles.
Changed and ate. You just read those words. I did it that fast.
Threw my leg over Il Giggolo and off we went for the warm up for the 5 mile Time Trial.
A 5 mile TT. How cruel is that. Harder effort than threshold, but easier than VO2Max. Like a 5K for the runners out there. We would be organized into 4 groups based on our time. The TT was uphill at the end, so power:weight ratio is important. But flat at the beginning.
Go. And the first 2 minutes were easy. The next 5 were searing pain. Then I settled in and caught some people before the climb started. The climb starts and I'm holding up pretty well and I see someone ahead. There's a few hairpins, I round the second one and...SNAP! My chain breaks.
I cursed a few times, took off my socks and shoes and I ran it in from 1K to go. Only 2 people caught me. Robbie looked at me like I was a nut when I crossed the finish line.
I still set some great personal bests for power--so the day wasn't all lost.
By the time I had my chain fixed I missed the "A" group heading out so I rode with Noda and some other campers on the "Short Fast Route". Some girls from Bermuda put their foot to the gas pedal on a descent and got us to the final climb of the day in good measure. I went over with Noda at which point he noticed my rediculous climbing gears. I explained that if I have to climb out of the saddle, I come to a dead stop.
We hammered on the way back into town--the roads were perfect for it. Good times.
Some food and off to a swim. 3100 yards with Ruben Figures running over me. It was tough.
Ran home from the swim. Another 4 miles or so.
Solid day.
Dinner.
Pillow.
