We finished the last ride of the camp! It was a GREAT day and GREAT Ride!! The race to Jalama Beach was a challenge and very technical. I used many of the riding skills that I have picked up before this week and during the week. We had a 5 mile climb in the middle of the race, according to the coaches. It was not as difficult as it might have been before Mt Fig! I came in 39/65 which is respectable for me and I had FUN!! Thanks to all of the VQ coaches and counselors who made this week challenging and fun!
Today was a 100K submax ride. While the average number of watts (152) there were some hill climbing involved (615 max). The interesting point is that after da Fig ride on Wed, they did not seem as steep today??? While I miss my family sooo much, this has been a good experience overall!!
Day 3, recovery ride. It was good to get out and spin the crap out of my legs after Mt Fig! The company was great the weather was great for cycling. I had my first mechanical issue today, the dreaded skipping chain syndrome!
A 11 mile climb with a 7% grade, that is just plain silly. I have heard and experienced a bonk before, but not a "Super Bonk." That sounds really, really bad. The fact that you are able to write about it during the same day is incredible. Keep about the awesome riding. How long does it take to ride 11 miles at that grade? I would probably be still out there in the dark, crying.
OK, Day 2 ride is over! While I experienced the Pain of an 11 mile climb at about 7% grade average. Some areas at 10% or better. I did complete the climb, but then experienced my first "Super Bonk" per Mr. Ventura. The climb was like nothing I had ever done before, ever...I would try it again, maybe next year?
The comraderie and fellowship of VQ athletes was in full bloom for me today. While there is a competitive edge while racing, when a fellow athlete needs assistance. Everyone steps in to help! What a great group of people. A big thanks to Cal Brown and Karyn Austin for their help today!!!!
Well Day 1 is coming to a close and it was challenging and yet satisfying. The challenge was to get through the time trial course and feel that I was able to have a decent time and good average watts. The 5 miles, all up by the way, was completed in 24:11 with an average of 265 watts. I am pleased with that. Then we had a 30 mile ride back to Solvang through some very pretty country. Total ride was 45 miles.
I will try to post some pics later tonight. We then went and did a swim brick of about 2000 yards. Which of course I cramped up in the last 200. Tomorrow, the Mountain!!??

Great job on the ride - 265 is awesome. Not a bad day, 45 miles and 2,000 yards - all in day 1.
Take care and post the pics.
